Virtual Assignments: Week of May 11-15
Welcome to our last week of virtual learning! Please use this week to complete the "My Life's Soundtrack" project if you haven't already done so, as well as any other unfinished work. This unprecedented situation has truly shown how flexible, adaptable, and positive you all can be in the face of adversity, and I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you.
We will have one last Zoom meeting on Thursday at 3:00 to clear up any last minute questions or concerns regarding final grades, plans and placement for next year, etc. ACCESS scores are in and I will share them with you as soon as they are made available to me.

Monday: Today we reviewed rhetorical strategies and learned about the different kinds of leads to use in our persuasive speeches.
Tuesday: Today we completed the pre-writing and wrote introductions to our persuasive speeches.
Wednesday: Today we learned about concessions, counterclaims, and rebuttals, and wrote the body paragraphs of our persuasive speeches.
Thursday: Today we learned how to write effective conclusions, and finished the rough drafts of our persuasive speeches.
Friday: Today we workshopped and peer-revised our persuasive speeches.

Monday: Today, we played several games to review for Tuesday's test.
Tuesday: Today we took the Unit 2 test.
Wednesday: Today we introduced our new unit, "Liberty and Justice for All," by participating in a four-corners activity and taking background notes.
Thursday: Today we analyzed elements of persuasion in two articles about World Cup soccer.
Friday: Today we signed up for our persuasive speech topics and learned more about rhetorical strategies.
Week 6:
Tuesday: Today we met in the computer lab to type our essays and post them to our online writing portfolios.
Wednesday: Today we continued working on our blogs and played online review games in preparation for our unit test.
Thursday: Today Ms. Geller was out for ESOL teacher training. We worked on review activities and hopefully behaved ourselves for the substitute!
Friday: Today we will meet in the Media Center to continue working on our blogs and reviewing for the test next Tuesday. We will also explore Pro/Con articles on NewsELA in preparation for our next unit, "Liberty and Justice for All." Click here for the handout with links to today's activities.

Monday: Today we completed differentiated group tasks about Martin Luther King, Jr.
Tuesday: Today we read and analyzed an informational text about Martin Luther King and chose another famous "dreamer" to research.
Wednesday: Today we used the MackinVia Biography in Context database to find information about the people we chose to research, and completed a graphic organizer to help plan our informational essays.
Thursday: Today we completed our graphic organizer and wrote the introductions to our informational essays.
Friday: Today we finished and peer-revised our rough drafts.

Week 4: August 22-26
Monday: Today we introduced Unit II, "Dreams for the Future," by completing an Anticipation Guide, learning Key Vocabulary, and completing a group brainstorm. We also read and discussed Langston Hughes' short poem, "Dreams," and wrote our own "Dreams" poem for homework.
Tuesday-Wednesday: On these days, we are meeting in the 907 lab to complete the following:
-Online writing portfolio setup
-Type final copy of "Dreams" poem
-Career interest inventory
Thursday: Today we will be back in the classroom. We will participate in a Readers' Theatre version of Laurance Yep's play, "Dragonwings."
Friday: Today, we will take a vocabulary quiz and read a nonfiction text about Leonardo DaVinci. We will also participate in a vocabulary-builder game using DaVinci's art.
Week 3: August 15-19
Monday: Today we read and analyzed a short biography of Roberto Clemente, "Pride of Puerto Rico."
Tuesday: Today we learned about homonyms, homophones, and homographs, and created homograph posters with our partners.
Wednesday: Today we read a nonfiction text called "Genes: A Family Inheritance," and wrote about a trait that we inherited from someone.
Thursday: Today we played Kahoot! and completed the Unit Review chart.
Friday: Today we took our Unit I Test.
Week 2: August 8-12
Monday: Today we finished our Elements of a Narrative group project.
Tuesday: Today we will take the first Common Assessment, the diagnostic pre-test for the course.
Wednesday: Today we will learn about Greek and Latin root words, create our own "portmanteau" nonsense words, and begin the rough draft of our personal vignettes.
Thursday: Today we will complete a peer-revision of our personal vignettes, and then head to the computer lab to type them.
Friday: Today we will meet in the computer lab again to set up our online writing portfolios and post the final drafts of our personal vignettes.
Week 1: August 1-5
Monday: Today we will play "Selfie Tic-Tac-Toe" and complete Partner Interviews in order to get to know each other. We will also write an Introductory Note, review the class procedures and expectations, and prepare our work folders.
Tuesday: Today we will complete an Anticipation Guide and learn some new vocabulary to introduce our first unit, "Family Connections."
Wednesday: Today we will read a short vignette, "My Name," from The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, and write about the importance of our own names and their origins.
Thursday: Today we will learn about the five main elements of fiction: plot, character, conflict, theme, and setting. We will identify these elements in Leonard Chang's short story, "My Korean Name."
Friday: First, we will review simple past tense verbs. Then, we will begin brainstorming our own narratives.
